In places like California, there is often problems of water shortage. Because of this, desalination plants have been built all over California to offset the impacts of water shortage caused by frequent droughts in the area. In California, there are 17 desalination plants and the largest desalination plant in USA called Carlsbad desalination plant is also located in California. Carlsbad desalination plant is the most technologically advanced desalination plant in the western hemisphere.

The world class desalination facility started to operate in the early part of 2016. it provides a reliable source of water especially when the residents on the west coast of California is being hit by a dry season. Carlsbad desalination plant has also helped in bolstering the economy by an additional $188 billions.

In the carlsbad desalination plant, the water will be pumped from the pacific ocean into the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon. The marine lives won’t be able to enter into the lagoon because there are screen filters that block them. It is estimated that it pump about 600 million gallons of water into the desalination system every day. The high pressure water will produce power for the Encina Power Station. The water that enter into the desalination system will pass through the reverse osmosis membrane filters. The reverse osmosis membrane filter will remove at least 99.8% of salt.

The desalination process consists of two water tanks. The tank with high pressure is where the water is flowing from and it has to pass through a membrane into another tank with low pressure. Salt and other contaminants will remain in the high pressure tank while clean water will end up in the low pressure tank.

The salt is later converted into brine. The brine will be diluted with water to reduce the salinity level so that it will reduce the harm done to the marine lives when it is released back into the ocean. Carlsbad desalination plant has produce more than 45 millions gallons of water which is enough to meet the demands of at least 7% of people and business entities in San Diego County.

Carlsbad desalination plant have sturdy structural designs to support the heavy on site equipment. Throughout the entire plant, there are intricate pipes of the reverse osmosis system. The plant is built to tolerate heat that is generated during the desalination process. Large pipes are being installed for transporting water that is moving at a high speed from the ocean to the plant.

Carlsbad desalination plant allows the community to stay independent from water sources that are fast depleting. In the past, desalination plants are limited to areas that do not have access to fresh water such as ships, and army camp. Desalination requires a lot of energy and involves a lot of costs.  PX pressure exchangers have been built in the Carlsbad desalination plant to reduce the footprint of CO2 emission. It is estimated that there is at least 41,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide being released into the environment every year.
